Who are we?

For a couple of years after I started the group in 2017, members came and went, but along the way some stuck.

These 13 people are our core members, and they are an amazing pool of talent covering a wide array of genres. Together, we have grown our craft as wordsmiths, supported each other through writer's block, COVID, rejection letters and the inability to make our characters do as they are told. Not to mention, the coffee doesn't drink itself.

It is with each other's support that we have had numerous success stories: New York Times bestsellers, three-book-deals with movie rights, agents outbidding each other for a manuscript and a slew of self published authors, all of whom now understand the joy of holding the finished product in your hands. And the amount of effort required after publication.

Bruce of the Northshore writers group

Bruce Wyness

Bruce grew up in a small country town close to beaches, rivers and farmland.

With a large family and many friends, life was good but that changed when at age 16 some of the family moved to the city over 500 km away. He experienced loneliness for the first time and used writing to fill that space.

After a career in the corporate world followed by time as a self-employed furniture maker Bruce rediscovered the joy of writing. He enjoys writing mainly short fiction but also reimagining and retelling family history.

He is an avid reader and an observer of people and

uses that to help craft his stories.

Nicola of the Northshore writers group

Nicola Dickinson

Nicola Dickinson will be eternally grateful for the North Shore Writers! Over the years, they have offered her valuable feedback and much-needed support, and also provided helpful tips regarding websites, apps, upcoming events, competitions and so forth. Her writing has improved dramatically as a result. She finds being part of a like-minded group, all bouncing ideas off each other, is not only inspiring — it’s also a lot of fun!

Nicola works as a relief teacher in Early Childhood, and writes picture book stories in her spare time.

Sarah of the Northshore writers group

Sarah Anderson

Sarah joined the North Shore Writers Group in search of guidance and inspiration in finishing her first novel – a project which lagged for years until she joined the group.

She is currently working on a novel length project where the Weaver brothers feature again.

When she’s not writing, Sarah works as a lawyer where she uses words to create a different type of magic.

Elizabeth and her writing companion, Mufasa

Elizabeth Viljoen

For Elizabeth Viljoen, joining the North Shore Writers’ Group was the best decision after emigrating from Namibia to New Zealand. She was working on her first novel at the time and looked for a group that could help refine the writing. The novel, a family saga, is now undergoing a second and final edit.

Previously, she was the editor of a small online magazine called Luhambo | Journey where beginner writers from all over the globe found a place to test the responses of their readers.

Currently, Elizabeth is doing a PhD in mythography (using myths in new writing) and mythologising (creating new myths through writing).

Frances of the Northshore writers group

Frances Denny

Frances Denny is an associate member of the Society of Authors in both the UK and New Zealand.

She writes upper-YA/NA paranormal romances and is signed with Kate Davids at Arc Literary Management. Her latest manuscript was shortlisted for the 2023 Page Turner Awards in the young writers category.

Andrew of the Northshore writers group

Andrew Imms

Andrew Imms is an aspiring author from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland Aotearoa New Zealand. Working on his first novel, he has been a member of the North Shore Writers group for the last couple of years, where he has dramatically increased the weirdness factor.

In his secret identity, he’s an ill-mannered project manager and consultant. However, when called upon … he transforms into his alter ID: fencing master, massive movie buff and horror novelist.  In his remaining time, he is either drinking flat whites, destroying what remains of his hearing at concerts, or being taken for walks by his greyhound.

Ada Maria, author and publisher from the Northshore writers group

Ada Maria Soto

A psychologist once told Ada Maria Soto that she has a fantasy- prone personality. Fortunately, Ada grew up to become an author, so a life lived deep in her imagination fits her perfectly. As a Mexican-American expat living in the South Pacific with her partner and kid, her life is chaotically divided between being a writer, a publisher, and a parent.

Ada has written some of the most beloved stories in the M/M romance genre despite her harried and haggard schedule, starting with the Empty Nests duology in 2015, which is as well known for her wonderful descriptions of cooking as for the contemporary romance between men who come from very different worlds.
